Anchorage Alaska Wild Edge Sanctuary Observatory Mountain Escape

Your Hostess, Debigail Cole, 1st visited Alaska after art college in 1976
during construction of the Trans Alaska Pipeline when excitement of a gold
rush permeated the small frontier town atmosphere of Anchorage.
Beautiful mountains, expansive natural spaces and ability to walk where
few had roamed intrigued her sense of creativity.
Born the 4rd Generation in Brooklyn, New York, Debi's 1st large travel
adventure began at 3 when her parents bought a small airstream trailer and
headed west to Southern California. Debi's father, a multi-talented
naturopathic healer, chiropractor, entertaining magician and curious world
traveler along with her mother Joan, a grounded human development
counselor who doubled as the family travel agent encouraged Debi's
curiosity in travel. They explored every part of the west coast; later
traversing many continents.
Growing up in Southern California in the Golden 50's-70's, a prolific
artist since her 1st crayons ... paintings of mountains she had not yet
seen decorated the family gallery.
Years of traveling seasonally across the Globe nurtured a deeper
appreciation of what Alaska offered.. an insight - filled visit with
merchants in India inspired purchasing an Anchorage home near the Lake
hood float plane Harbour in 1993, where she opened 'A Cousin of Mine In
Alaska Bed & Breakfast'.
Her 1st attempt at a guest house proved very rewarding serving hundreds of
happy travelers until the relocation in 2004... however, by '98 wanderlust
captured her attention while many new locations in several states and
countries were considered to spread her creative wings.
Meanwhile, B&B travelers enthusiasm continued to renew her love for Alaska
upon each visit... Common sense prevailed when she decided to 'bloom near
where planted'.. thus inspiring the search for a convenient city's edge
rural Alaskan Location for her next residence. Luck and timing brought her
to an untamed wetlands valley in the hillside. This mountain nature
property was acquired in 1998 to expand her visions of a dream location
for future guests...
Being a conservationist and avid recycler, Debi took much care to keep
most of the natural vegetation and an innovative plan was formed for the
following years of seasonal rugged land development. She designed the home
herself, with structural components engineered by experts who work on the
North Slope above the Arctic Circle, where extreme conditions occur.
The Penthouse floor mural was the first surface completed in the house and
on Summer Solstice 2003 Aawesome Retreat B&B was finally inhabited by its
excited designer. Living with no amenities while working on the project
for several months was a joy. Then, in the winter of 2003, Aawesome
Retreat B&B welcomed its 1st guests with an official opening the following
spring of 2004.
This unique resort style home offers guests an inspirational experience
while enjoying the art displays back dropped by expansive natural scenery
of nearby mountains and striking Inlet views beyond Anchorage.
Interior decisions at Aawesome included a palette of special white 'Taj
Mahal' style marble for bathrooms, bold colorful paint, and a life time
collection of original art.
These pieces include several lovely Chinese water colors painted by Debi's father,
selected photographs by Debi, and an immense display of wood sculptures &
masks and exotic paintings from Asian travels adorn each room with plenty
of open space to feel serene.
Guests may also delight in the only remaining unfinished areas of the
Retreat ... Debi's current favorite art projects are two functioning
co-op bathrooms where large mosaic installations are underway, one tile
and keepsake at a time.
Debi appreciates her guests and has a keen insight into what is
comfortable .. attempting to include every detail needed for a pleasant
independent stay.
She is delighted to visit, detailing your itinerancy or leave you to your peace.
You need only inquire for an enthusiastic story or a local tip or a
household need.
Aawesome Retreat B&B welcomed its 1st guests in winter 2003 with an
official opening the following spring of 2004.
Debi loves animals so much she spent years of vacations volunteering at
various exotic animal compounds. Consequently Aawesome Retreat welcomes
pet guests with reservations where her dog, Future Sky, is a wonderful
assistant hostess.
The name of this establishment was collected from inspirations in the 1st
notes about the property search .. sanctuary, observatory, mountain
escape. Then noting the location on the Southern edge of the Anchorage
map enroute to the Kenai Peninsula .. easily adding Wild along with her
love for a friends little leopard whose name bares a favorite exclamation
.. 'Awesome'.. who's cunning portrait may be viewed in the guest lounge.
Then add Anchorage Alaska ..When you arrive for your first visit you will
truly understand the acronym.. Aawesome!
